The author, a Research Fellow in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, has a research interest in evaluation of evidence in civil as well as criminal law, and brings his experience to bear when describing the application of statistical concepts.
Only a modest mathematical background is assumed, and the author's approach is mainly common sense when discussing the illustrative examples and case studies. The text is in two parts.
The first part, comprising chapters 1 to 8, introduces the reader to the field of Univariate statistics. Then follow nine chapters on evaluation of evidence using Bayesian approach. Recent developments like use of DNA as forensic evidence have been dealt with using several case studies. Each chapter ends with review questions to ensure that the objectives of the chapter have been well understood.
Solutions are provided as an appendix at the end.
